In 2013, I served as the Interim Executive Director of Chicago Commons, a $28 million human service agency. I served initially in a steward role to manage the existing projects and endeavors. It became clear that significant efforts needed to be made in fixing systems required to run a growing agency such as implementing a new HRIS system, which we did. Executive Directors often lack the time to work on these major efforts while an experienced Interim Executive Director can achieve success. More info

During 2013, I was asked to serve as the Interim Executive Director of Chicago Commons. As I was the immediate past Chairman of the Board, I was asked to run the agency, while a national search was conducted for a permanent replacement. Initially, I served as a steward of the staff and the agency's culture. Over time, it was clear that the growth of the agency from $11 million to $28 million required that antiquated business systems needed improvement to support the demands of a mid-sized business with 260 full-time and 530 part-time staff.
While I am proud of all of the achievements, I am most excited about a Head Start funding request for $1 million that was granted. Together with the management team, I identified serious needs in the agency, developed a persuasive narrative to support these needs for future growth, and produced the proposal. During this period, we submitted grant requests for $1.5 million and were granted $1.35 million of them. This is a significant success.
Other achievements included:
contributing to and leading initiatives to strengthen the relationships of the management team
revising the Strategic Plan to reflect new growth opportunities
overseeing doubling of the size of the in-home senior care program and the implementation of the Electronic Visit Verification system
helping prepare for the Federal Review for Child Development
identifying a path for stronger job readiness program support in West Humboldt Park
selecting and implementing an extensive human resource information system (HRIS)
implementing an extensive lobbying program and public relations campaign including creating outdoor boards on a major expressway to broaden the agency's message
modifying the agency's message to focus on economic development (creating job readiness) rather than the traditional social service message
